SCHOLARSHIP TRUST
In keeping with its strong sense of obligation to the community and the legal profession, the firm has established a Scholarship Trust to render assistance to Barbadian students pursuing studies at the Hugh Wooding Law School. The Trust is administered by a Board of Trustees of which Sir Frederick Smith, M.B.E., Q.C., is Chairman. Sir Frederick Smith is a former Attorney General of Barbados and Chief Justice of Turks and Caicos.
The Trust currently awards two scholarships per year. In addition to the finance component, each scholarship also includes a work attachment to the firm, for the scholarship recipients.
Applications are invited between the months of May and July each year. Click here to download the application form. Please note: No employee or relative of any employee of the firm shall be eligible to apply for the scholarship.

2009 Scholarship recipient: Sade Neisha Jemmott
Sade Neisha Jemmott of Hillably, St Andrew, is the 2009 winner of the award by the GWP&Co. Scholarship Trust. The Scholarship winner received her primary education at Hillaby/Turners Hall Primary School. She subsequently attended Queens College followed by the Law Faculty at Cave Hill from September 2006 where she graduated with Upper Second Class Honours in the LLB programme at the end of the 2008/09 academic year. The award for 2009 was presented to the scholarship winner by Attorney-at-Law Shontelle Murrell, the representative of George Walton Payne & Co. on the Board of Trustees. She was a previous scholarship winner in 2004. The Secretary/Treasurer of the Trust retired Permanent Secretary Darwin Goodridge and Shellyann Barrow, an aunt of the recipient, were present during the award ceremony which was held at Dowell House, Bridgetown on Friday, 4 September 2009.

2008 Scholarship recipient: Susan Latoya Rock
The 2008 recipient the GWP & Co. Scholarship was Susan Latoya Rock. Susan attended St. Lucy Primary School and St. James Secondary School. Her post secondary scholastic achievements include the Associate Degree in Arts (Geography and Law) from the Barbados Community College in 2002, the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Linguistics with First Class Honours from the University of the West Indies in 2005 and the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Degree from the Law Faculty at Cave Hill in 2008. The award for 2008 was presented to the winner by Madam Justice Dr. Sonia Richards, during a short ceremony at Dowell Chambers, Bridgetown on Thursday, 28 August 2008. Present were Shirley Rock, the Mother of Latoya Rock, Nicole Nurse, Diana Douglin and Darwin Goodgridge.

2007 Scholarship recipient: Richelle Connell
Richelle Maria Connell of Melane Close, Hothersal Turning was educated at Charles F. Broome Primary School , Queen’s College, the Barbados Community College and the University of the West Indies . She graduated from the Law Faculty at Cave Hill with upper second class honours in the LLB programme at the end of the 2006/2007 academic year.
Darwin Goodridge, Secretary/Treasurer of the Scholarship Trust, presented Richelle Connell with her award at the law offices of George Walton Payne & Co., on Tuesday, 28th August 2007 while Nicole A. Nurse, Attorney-at-law of GWP & Co. looks on.

2006 Scholarship recipient: Tya Atwell
Tya Renee Atwell, of St. Stephen’s Hill, Black Rock, St. Michael, is the 2006 recipient of the GWP & Co. Scholarship.
Tya, who graduated from the Law Faculty of the Cave Hill Campus of the U.W.I, with First Class Honours, will be pursuing
the two year Legal Education Certificate programme from September at the Hugh Wooding Law School.
Tya is a former student of St. Stephen’s Primary School and Harrison College. Presentation of the award was made on
Friday, August 18, 2006 by Mr. Darwin Goodridge, Secretary of the Scholarship Trust. The presentation took place at
the offices of George Walton Payne & Co. and was witnessed by her mother, Judith Atwell and Ms. Nicole A. Nurse, an
Attorney-at-Law with the Firm.

2005 Scholarship recipient: Richard Arthur
Mr. Richard Arthur was the eight recipient of the George Walton Payne & Company Scholarship Trust in 2005. Mr. Arthur holds
both a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of the West Indies. Mr. Arthur
entered Hugh Wooding Law School in 2005 to complete two years of study. A formr student of the Lodge School, Mr. Arthur was
the past President of the Guild of Students at (UWI) and a member of the 2006 Hugh Wooding Law School Client Interviewing Team.

2004 Scholarship recipient: Shontelle Murrell

The 2004 recipient of the George Walton Payne & Company Scholarship Trust was Shontelle Nicole Murrell. During her tenure at the University
of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus, Ms. Murrell was th recipient of the 2002-2003 Carrington & Sealy Law
Scholarship, following which she completed her Bachelor of Laws degree with Upper Second Class Honours. Ms. Murrell, a former student of the Combermere
School, also obtained a Certificate of Mediation during her studies at the Hugh Wooding Law School which she successfully completed in 2006.

2003 Scholarship recipient: Ruan Martinez
Ruan Martinez was the sixth recipient of the George Walton Payne & Co Scholarship Trust in 2003. She attended Combermere School and graduated from Florida International University with a Bachelors degree
in Business Administration in Finance and International Business in 1999. Miss Martinez graduated from the University of the West Indies with a Bachelor of Laws degree in 2003.

2002 Scholarship recipient: Jennifer Small
Jennifer Small was the George Walton Payne & Co Scholarship Trust recipient in 2002 having completed her Bachelor of Laws degree at the University of the West Indies. She attended Combermere School and upon
completion of her legal studies, shw was attached to the Supreme Court of Judicature as a judicial research assistant.

2001 Scholarship recipient: Nicole Roachford
Nicole Roachford was the fourth recipient of the George Walton Payne & Co. Scholarship Trust. Miss Raochford entered the Hugh Wooding Law School in 2001 having
completed courses of study at the University of the West Indies in a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Bachelor of Laws. She is a former student of The St. Michael School
and Queen's College.

2000 Scholarship recipient: Ouida Boyce
Ouida Boyce, the third recipient of the George Walton Payne & Company Scholarship Trust, entered the Hugh Wooding Law School in 2000, to complete two years of Law studies.
Ms. Boyce is a former student of Harrison College, and holds a Bachelor of Law Degree from the University of the West Indies.

1999 Scholarship recipient: Laura Gooding
The 1999 recipient of the George Walton Payne & Company Scholarship Trust was Laura Gooding, who graduates from the Hugh Wooding Law School, Trinidad, in 2001.
Ms. Gooding, who has completed her Bachelor of Law Degree at the University of the West Indies, is a former student of Ellerslie Secondary School and Combermere.

1998 Scholarship recipient: Diana Douglin
Ms. Diana Douglin was the first recipient of the George Walton Payne & Company Scholarship Trust in 1998. She completed her Bachelor of Law Degree with Upper Second
Class Honours at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, before proceeding to the Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad, graduating in 2000, at the top of her class.
Ms. Douglin, a former student of Harrison College, joined GWP&Co.as an associate in 2000. She is currently secretary of the George Walton Payne & Company Scholarship Trust.
